Why do some black
women date or have a white boyfriend?
Is it the attention they draw from the onlookers? Maybe it’s
because he doesn’t hesitate to tell her over and over again
how
beautiful she is, as he touches her face, cups it in his hands. There
is a need being met between them, perhaps they fulfill each others
fantasy of romantic meetings and dinners in far away places, or maybe
there really is love in the air. Couples of color, sometimes referred
to as interracial, or mixed raced couples, do turn heads wherever they
go. The attention can be negative or positive. Folks will stare but
that is the price paid for daring to be different.
Don’t
fool yourself. Color is still an issue
today. So lessen the stress on the relationship by open discussions.
Talk about what you would expect of each other in situations where
someone would have a problem with your relationship choices. The
decision to date outside of your race means not only are you willing to
stand up for him, if need be, but that he will feel the same way about
you.
Beware of the
boyfriend who wants to kiss and feel you
up when a black man is watching, yet in the presence of his own color,
or white women, he keeps his distance. If this happens, talk it out.
Maybe he is not aware of what he is doing.
This is a
challenging relationship to be in. There is a
lot of pressure from outside. Making the choice to be in an interracial
relationship is not about two colors coming together, but two people
who decided to put the obvious aside to be together.
It takes work on
both sides. Help your white boyfriend
by encouraging him to be himself. Let him know that he does have to act
black, or talk black (whatever that is). Chances are, your friends and
family will be more accepting than his at first. That is just the way
it is. Respect them where they are. Be yourself with them. You are not
dating them. Get over your sensitive feelings. People are who they are.
Unfortunately, there are many who are ignorant about other cultures.
If this
relationship is meant to go further, it will; if
not, it won’t. But for the moment, enjoy.
